Sto History

Sto is a global business that was founded and led by members of the German Stotmeister family. Starting in 1936 with a lime plant in Klengen, they pioneered the introduction of high-quality synthetic resin wall coatings in the European market.
Now, more than 80 years later, Sto is active in over 90 countries with over 5000 staff and we continue to innovate through technological leadership in all of our core markets, with heavy investment in Research & Development.
Sto started operations in Southeast Asia region in 2001, following the acquisition of Dyckerhoff. and as part of the Sto Group, our extensive product range is backed by comprehensive technical, design and consultancy support, enabling us to deliver advanced solutions to meet different types of design specifications.

Wilhelm Stotmeister acquires the lime and cement works in Weizen.
1955
Fritz Stotmeister establishes Ispo-Putz KG
1961
First branch opens in Markgröningen
1962
The Sto brand is born: founding of Stotmeister & Co. Farben- und Baustoff-KG
1966
The first external wall insulation system of Sto was out on the market
1970
Beginning of the export business
1972
First subsidiary in Switzerland
1979
Founding of Sto Corp. in the US; 1979, subsidiaries in France, Austria, Scandinavia follows
1988
Sto GmbH becomes Sto AG
1992
Founding of StoVerotec GmbH
1996
Founding of StoCretec GmbH
1997
Completion of the new communications building
1999
DIN EN ISO 14001 Certification obtain at the Stühlingen office
2000
Founded the first subsidiary in Asia
2001
Foray into Singapore and Malaysia market following the acquisition of ispo GmbH from Dyckerhoff AG.
2002
Merger of Sto and ispo
2003
Completion of Sto Production plant in Weizen
2005
StoVerotec acquires the natural stone works HEMM.STONE
2006
Completion of Sto Service Factory: state-of-the-art installation engineering throughout Europe
2008
Construction of additional production facilities in the USA and Austria
2010
Sto Group commences insulant production 2010 at the Lauingen plant
2014
Change of legal form from Sto AG to Sto SE & Co. KGaA
Founding of the subsidiary in Mexico
Takeover of Argamont Argamont in Brazil
Completion of the extension/renovation of the Logistics Centre in Weizen
2015
Founding of the subsidiary in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
2016
Majority interest in Ströher GmbH?
